PARIS, Jan 21 (AFP) - French retail prices rose by 0.2 percent in December from the figure for the previous month and by 2.1 percent on a 12-month basis, final data released Friday by the national statistics institute Insee showed.

"The slight progression of the price index in December masks contrasted, and in some cases marked, movements," Insee noted in a statement.

Fresh food prices, for example, shot up by 2.5 percent on the month but were 0.5 percent lower than one year earlier.

Another sub category, "other services", showed an increase of 0.3 percent from November, but was up by 3.3 percent from December 2003.

Energy costs dropped by 1.2 percent on the month, but soared by 10.2 percent on the year.

When calculated according to a harmonised European index, French inflation amounted to 0.2 percent on a monthly basis, and 2.3 percent on the year, Insee said.
