PARIS, Jan 6 (AFP) - French charities have received a total of EUR 65 million (USD 86 million) in contributions from the public for the relief effort in south Asia, according to a tally Thursday.

On Tuesday the figure stood at EUR 35 million.

The chief recipients were the French Red Cross, Doctors without Borders (MSF), the Catholic agency Caritas and the UN children's fund UNICEF.

The surprise announcement by MSF Monday that it was suspending appeals for aid because it had received enough money did not appear to have slowed down the rate of contributions.
