BEIJING, April 21 (AFP) - The French energy and engineering groups Areva and Alstom reached deals Thursday to provide power generation equipment for the extension of the Ling Ao nuclear power plant in China's southern province of Guangdong, officials said.

The signings were witnessed by visiting French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao.

Areva signed a contract to furnish a command and control system for the power plant worth some EUR 110 million (USD 143 million), French officials said, although it was unclear if the deal was a preliminary pact or a confirmed order.

The engineering group Alstom finalised a EUR 100 million deal to supply turbines for the plant, the official said.

The French groups Areva and Framatome in March signed a contract worth EUR 240 million for the construction of a nuclear core, he said.
