French film producer commits suicide

PARIS, Feb 11 (AFP) - French film producer Humbert Balsan, best known for his work with the Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, committed suicide Thursday, friends said Friday. He was 50.

PARIS, Feb 11 (AFP) - French film producer Humbert Balsan, best known for his work with the Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, committed suicide Thursday, friends said Friday. He was 50.

Born into a wealthy family of industrialists in southwest France, Balsan started a career as an actor before turning to production in the late 1970s. In all he produced some 60 films.

He made several films with Chahine including "Adieu Bonaparte" and last year's "Alexandria ... New York." He also worked with the Palestinian Elia Suleiman and the American James Ivory.
