French fighter jets make emregency landing in Malta again
Two French Mirage fighter jets taking part in NATO operations in Libya made an emergency landing in Malta Saturday after one of them developed a fault in its hydraulic system, aviation officials said. The aircraft landed safely and fire engines and other rescue vehicles were on stand-by. The pilots requested refuelling.
Civil aviation sources told AFP the pilots told air traffic controllers that they had no bombs on board but just guns.
Another two French Mirages made an emergency landing in Malta on Wednesday when a technical problem prevented them from refuelling in mid-air. They flew back to their base in Corsica after refuelling.
France is one of the most active participants in a NATO-led international coalition taking part in combat operations against Libya following the approval of a UN Security Council resolution to defend civilians in Libya.
