VALENCE, France, July 12, 2007 (AFP) - A French father in the midst of a bitter divorce has been detained on suspicion of killing his three children aged four, six and 12, prosecutors said Thursday.

The two girls and one boy were found dead in a bath at the man's home in Montelimar, southeast France, on Wednesday. The 37-year-old father was later detained in the French Alps where he was with his girlfriend.

Deputy prosecutor Gilbert Emery said the father, a hypermarket manager, had confessed to police that he killed the children.

The prosecutor said in a statement that the deaths were part of "a context of a conflictual separation" with his wife.

Investigators said the three children may have been poisoned before their bodies were put in the bath. The mother became worried and alerted police after the children did not return from a regular visit with their father. Police found the bodies at the home.

Another prosecution official, Francis Montoy, said that the man's girlfriend had not been aware of the deaths when he was detained.
