French farmer shoots dead labour inspectors

SAUSSIGNAC, France, Sept 2 (AFP) - Two labour inspectors checking the contracts of seasonal plum pickers in the southwestern French region of Dordogne were shot dead by a farmer on Thursday.

SAUSSIGNAC, France, Sept 2 (AFP) - Two labour inspectors checking the contracts of seasonal plum pickers in the southwestern French region of Dordogne were shot dead by a farmer on Thursday.  

Farmer Gerard Dubiau, 57, opened fire on the inspectors and then tried to kill himself after his workers were asked to produce their papers, legal sources said.  

A female labour inspector in her 40s died immediately while a male colleague succumbed to his injuries later in hospital.  

Their identities were not revealed.
