PARIS, April 14 (AFP) - The French economy grew by 0.4 percent in the first quarter, the Bank of France said on Thursday in an unchanged estimate.

Growth in the second quarter was likely to be 0.5 percent, the bank said.

The bank said that on these figures, and if output for the rest of the year was flat, the economy would have grown by 1.6 percent: a calculation used as an indicator of the minimum growth which is likely to be achieved provided there is no downturn.

The bank also said that its indicator of business confidence in the industrial sector had fallen further in March to 98 from 101 in February when the indicator had fallen by four points.
