French customs on Friday announced a record drug bust after seizing 1.39 tonnes of cocaine from a sailboat off the Caribbean island of Martinique worth nearly 100 million dollars.

"The value of the seized goods are estimated at over 83 million euros on the street," a statement said, adding that it was the biggest drug haul in France.

The cocaine was found hidden among jute sacks and was probably destined for the European market, it said.
