PARIS, June 17 (AFP) - The deficit in the French current account widened to nearly EUR 3.4 billion (USD 4.1 billion) in April from EUR 2 billion in March, the finance ministry announced here Friday.

It said the expansion in the shortfall was largely due to trade in goods, which showed a deficit of EUR 3.2 billion after EUR 2.3 billion in March, when the value of imports increased while that of exports remained stable.

The current account is a broad measure covering trade in goods, services and certain financial transactions.

The deficit in the first four months of 2005 came to EUR 11.5 billion from EUR 10.4 billion in the same period last year.
