A French court on Tuesday ordered Panama's former dictator Manuel Noriega to be remanded in custody here as he awaits trial on charges of laundering drugs money.

The 76-year-old general, who ruled Panama from 1981 to 1989, was extradited to France earlier Tuesday from the United States and was taken directly to a Paris courthouse to hear the charges against him.

Noriega was convicted in absentia here in 1999 for laundering drug profits and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Under French law, defendants tried in absentia are entitled to a new trial.
