VERSAILLES - Police have detained a French couple for alleged "torture and barbarity" against their four-year-old adopted daughter, a prosecutor said Thursday.

The girl bore injuries including missing teeth, broken bones, depigmentation cause by the intake of corrosive chemicals, cuts to her tongue and oesophagus, bruises and human bite marks, prosecutor Luc-Andre Lenormand said.

Police were alerted by medical staff at a hospital in Paris who were alarmed at the girl's condition.

Doctors who examined the girl said they had never come across such a range of abuse, said Lenormand.

Her parents, from Sartrouville northwest of the capital, deny the allegations.
