A manhunt is underway after a French police officer allegedly shot and killed his wife and two young children in Cabanac.

TOULOUSE – A French policeman was on the run Tuesday after apparently shooting dead his wife and two young children in a village in the Pyrenees Mountains, police said.

The officer's wife, their four-year-old son and his 10-year-old daughter from a first marriage, were found dead early Tuesday at their home in Cabanac near the southwestern town of Tarbes.

According to the deputy mayor of Cabanac Henri Desconet, the 42-year-old Thierry Gourjault is thought to have shot them Monday night, leaving a note saying he planned to take his own life.

Gourjault's father discovered the bodies early Tuesday, alerted after his son sent a text message to a fellow policeman telling him he had "done something irreparable."

A manhunt was underway across the southwestern region, police said.
