French convict in Australia plot could face release

A Frenchman jailed in France for plotting attacks in Australia could be up for early release next year, his lawyer has said.

PARIS - Willie Brigitte, who received a nine-year jail sentence in 2007, hopes to be eligible for a "remission of his sentence" from late 2010, the lawyer Jean-Claude Durimel told AFP.

However he stressed that "nothing was decided," playing down press reports that Brigitte would be freed next year for good behaviour after serving less than half of his sentence.

Brigitte, a Muslim convert from the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, was jailed in France in 2007 for plotting to blow up a nuclear power plant in Australia and other possible targets.
