French citizen murdered in Georgia hotel

A French citizen has been stabbed to death in his room at an exclusive hotel in the capital of ex-Soviet Georgia, the interior ministry said on Thursday.

An interior ministry spokesman told AFP the murder took place early Thursday morning at the Courtyard Marriott hotel in Tbilisi but declined to name the victim or give any further details about the incident.

Staff at the hotel also declined to comment.

The hotel is part of the global Marriott chain and is often used by foreign businessmen, politicians, journalists and people working for international agencies.

Serious attacks on foreigners have become rare in Georgia in recent years, after several notorious cases of murder and kidnapping during the chaotic period of civil war, corruption and lawlessness which followed the country's independence from the Soviet Union.
