MADRID, July 18 (AFP) - A night-time raid of a yacht along the Asturias coast of northern Spain resulted in the seizure of a half-tonne of cocaine and the arrest of a French citizen, the Spanish interior ministry announced Monday.

In an operation dubbed "Capitan Garfio" (Captain Hook), police stormed the luxury boat late Sunday in a raid that lasted into the early hours of Monday morning.

The yacht -- whose sole operator was a Frenchman identified only as Jacques Joseph S. -- was then escorted to the northern Spanish port of Gijon.

The police operation is continuing and more arrests are possible, the ministry said in a statement.

Spain is a principal port of entry into Europe of South American cocaine, particularly along its Atlantic coast.

The largest cocaine seizure to date in Spain took place in July 1999, when customs agents seized 15 tonnes of the drug aboard a vessel in the Canary Islands and in the northwestern region of Galicia.

Spanish authorities last week dismantled a drug trafficking and money laundering ring operating between Spain's southern coast and Britain, seizing assets worth tens of millions of euros.
