SINGAPORE, Sept 30 (AFP) - Prestigious French business school ESSEC announced Thursday it would open a campus in Singapore in a bid to gain a presence in Asia and capture a share of the region's growing higher education market.

The ESSEC Asia Centre will begin as a research facility offering short-term executive programs before expanding into a full campus as early as next year with the goal of offering MBA programmes by 2006.

Officially opening the research facility on Thursday, ESSEC president Pierre Tapie told reporters the decision to set up in Singapore was made to "make us more available and visible in Asia".

"(We want to) gain competence and know how about Asian affairs. Asia is moving so fast and we need an Asian competence," he said.

Tapie said Singapore was chosen ahead of Shanghai and Tokyo as the location for the campus because of the city-state's rich mix of Asian cultures.

ESSEC joins rival French business school INSEAD in establishing a campus in Singapore.
