French build mattress pyramid, seek end to eviction
Charity workers who built a pyramid of mattresses in Paris hope that people who are unable to pay their rent will not be evicted till at least 2009.PARIS – French charity workers on Monday built a pyramid of mattresses in a central Paris square to call for an end to the eviction of people unable to pay their rent.
The protest on Republique square by the Emmaus charity came on the day the annual French winter ban on evictions ended.
The charity says that about half a million French households are behind with their rents and 220,000 people are living in lodgings where they are under an eviction order.
"We are asking for a moratorium on evictions for 2009 at least," Emmaus president Christophe Deltombe said.
French law states that no-one can be evicted between November and mid-March.
