French-backed op hits Al-Qaeda cell linked to kidnappers
A French-backed raid by Mauritanian troops targeted an Al-Qaeda group linked to the kidnap four months ago of a French aid worker and the killing of a British hostage, the defence ministry said Friday.
"The group of terrorists targeted by the Mauritanian operation was the one that killed a British hostage a year ago and which has refused to give 'proof of life' and enter talks on freeing our compatriot Michel Germaneau."
It said that French forces provided technical and logistical support to a Mauritanian operation that "neutralised" a group of Al-Qaeda kidnappers in the North African desert.
Members of the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb group have threatened to kill the French hostage.
