A French air force jet evacuated around 250 nationals from quake-hit Japan to South Korea on Thursday, the French military said amid fears of a radioactive disaster from a stricken nuclear plant.

Two air force Airbus planes are involved in the evacuation effort, chief of staff spokesman Colonel Thierry Burkhard said. Another flight is to leave Tokyo for Seoul on Thursday afternoon, he said.

Several countries have started evacuation plans for their nationals in Japan, advising them to head for the capital as army helicopters water-bomb an overheating power plant at Fukushima.
