BRUSSELS, Aug 11 (AFP) - The European Commission added four products including Scottish farmed salmon Wednesday to a growing list of foods that are protected by EU labels of origin.

The coveted labels were also conferred on French Valencay cheese and two Spanish products, Extramadoure beef and Majorca olive oil.

Only products made within designated regions using traditional methods can carry the label of either Protected Designation of Origin or Protected Geographical Indication.

The European list was created in 1992 to discourage producers of inferior rivals and to promote regional specialities. It now numbers around 650 products, including Normandy Camembert, Parma ham and Newcastle Brown Ale.
