French PM says Lagarde quality IMF candidate
French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is not just a European candidate for the post of IMF head but one with great credentials, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said on Wednesday.
"Christine Lagarde isn't just the French or European candidate but a candidate of quality, effectiveness and balance between economic performance and solidarity," Fillon said at a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development.
Lagarde formally threw her hat into the ring to become the next managing director of the International Monetary Fund earlier on Wednesday.
A respected figure on the world financial stage, Lagarde has received wide European backing for the post although emerging powers have complained that the job should not automatically go to a European, as IMF tradition dictate
