PARIS, Jan 4 (AFP) - French shoppers are preparing to hit the stores across much of the country from Wednesday, when retailers will sharply mark down merchandise for the traditional January winter sales.

While bargain hunters in Paris and most of France will be combing through shops looking for a deal, consumers on the Mediterranean island of Corsica and in seven other departments will have to wait until Thursday for price cuts.

Business owners are hoping to boost their turnover by moving big stocks of winter clothing at lower prices during the sales period, set to last about six weeks in most areas of France.

On the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, the semi-annual sales will begin on January 15 and end on February 25.
