PARIS, Aug 7 (AFP) - French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy paid homage to former British foreign secretary Robin Cook, who died on Saturday, and hailed his dedication to friendship between the two countries.

In a statement, Douste-Blazy said he had learned of Cook's death with "a lot of sadness" and paid "homage to the memory of this man, who was deeply European and committed to Franco-British friendship."

Cook, who quit Britain's cabinet in 2003 over the decision to go to war in Iraq, died while out walking with his wife in Scotland. He was 59.
