French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner was en route for Afghanistan on Friday, official sources said, on an unannounced trip that did not appear on his official schedule.

Asked about the visit, ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said simply that he would reveal more details at a scheduled press briefing later in the day.

France has around 3,750 soldiers in Afghanistan fighting Islamist insurgents and training Afghan forces as part of the US-led NATO coalition, and two French journalists have been held hostage there for more than 10 months.
