WASHINGTON, March 9 (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice welcomed French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie here Wednesday, at the start of her three-day official visit to the United States.

"We discussed issues on which the United States and France are side by side, in particular Afghanistan and Kosovo," Alliot-Marie told reporters after a 50 minute meeting with Rice.

"We spoke also about the situation in Iraq and about training of future Iraqi police and we broached the problem of relations between the United States and Europe and of the lifting of Europe's embargo against China."

Alliot-Marie will be in the United States until Friday, and will meet her US counterpart, Donald Rumsfeld, as well as US lawmakers.

She will head Friday to Boston.
