Franco-Palestinian theatre director Abu Salem dies
Franco-Palestinian actor, theatre founder and director Francois Abu Salem has died at the age of 60 in the West Bank, Palestinian security forces said Saturday.
The cause of death was unknown and an enquiry was immediately opened, the sources said, adding that suicide was one of the possibilities under consideration.
Born in 1951 to a Palestinian father and French mother, Abu Salem was co-founder of the El-Hakawati Theatre Company, the origins of the Palestinian National Theatre, in East Jerusalem.
He was best known as a theatre director and also adapted plays by international writers, including Dario Fo and Bertolt Brecht for a Palestinian audience.
Abu Salem, who also directed movies, received the Palestine Prize for theatre from then-Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in 1998.
