France's Roma policies 'exacerbate' their stigmatisation: UN

France's policies on Roma gypsies only serves to exacerbate the stigmatisation of the minority traveller community, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said Monday.

Noting French policies such as the dismantling of the community's settlements, Navi Pillay said: "This can only exacerbate the stigmatisation of Roma and the extreme poverty in which they live."

"I urge European States, including France, to adopt policies enabling Roma people to overcome their marginalisation."
