France warns Myanmar against restrictions on freed Suu Kyi
French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned Myanmar against any new restrictions on the freedom of movement and expression of Aung Sang Suu Kyi after she was freed Saturday from seven years of house arrest.
"France will be extremely attentive to the conditions in which Madame Aung San Suu Kyi enjoys her refound liberty," Sarkozy said in a statement welcoming the release of the democracy icon.
Any "restrictions on her freedom of movement and expression would constitute a new unacceptable denial of her rights," he said in the statement issued by the presidency.
Suu Kyi, a symbol of the fight for democracy in military ruled Myanmar, has spent most of the past 20 years under house arrest.
