France's prime minister on Tuesday urged the United Nations to speak out against Syria's deadly crackdown on protests by security forces that has cost hundreds of lives.

"The UN Security Council cannot remain silent for much longer," Francois Fillon said during a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Vladmir Putin.

"The time has come when everyone will have to face up to their responsibilities," he said.

Western governments have been circulating a draft UN Security Council resolution that would condemn Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown but Russia has warned it would veto any such move.
