France is to unblock 1.5 billion euros (2.15 billion dollars) in frozen Libyan assets for the country's rebel leaders, Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Thursday.

"There are tens of billions of euros in frozen assets. The Americans have unblocked theirs and the British, French and Germans are doing the same," he told RTL radio ahead of international talks in Paris on the future of Libya.

"France has obtained permission to unfreeze 1.5 billion euros so that reconstruction can begin," he said, describing how the allies are working through the UN Sanctions Committee to track and unblock Libyan money.
