PARIS, Jan 6 (AFP) - France on Thursday announced the dispatch of five helicopters and a navy frigate to supplement the military resources already committed to the relief effort after the tsunami in south Asia.

Five Puma helicopters will be air-freighted to the region at the start of next week, defence ministry spokesman Jean-Francois Bureau said. The frigate Dupleix, which carries a further helicopter, will operate off the Maldives and Sri Lanka, he said.

France has already sent two ships - the helicopter-carrier Jeanne d'Arc and the frigate Georges Leygues - to help with the aid effort. They are expected to arrive off Indonesia in a week.

In addition a coastguard plane is helping to find bodies off the Thai coast.
