SANAA, March 8, 2007 (AFP) - France will provide some 100 million euros (around 130 million dollars) to assist development in Yemen over five years, a French minister said Thursday during a visit to Sanaa.

France will provide the aid starting this year until 2011 to promote development in Yemen, one of the world's poorest countries, said Minister for Cooperation, Development and Francophony Brigitte Girardin.

Girardin, who arrived in Yemen earlier Thursday, said France would open an office of the French Development Agency in Sanaa next September.

The French minister made her remarks at a news conference held at the ministry of planning and international cooperation to mark the signing of a framework partnership document between Paris and Sanaa.

She said the aid will mostly be in the form of interest-free loans to fund infrastructure and agricultural projects.
