France tells citizens to avoid protest-hit Syrian cities

France on Monday warned its citizens against travelling to two protest-hit Syrian cities where dozens have reportedly been killed in demonstrations against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

"The cities of Latakia and Daraa should be avoided and, to come or go from Jordan, the Nassib-Jaber crossing point should be taken," a travel advisory on the foreign ministry's website said.

The Nassib-Jaber crossing into Jordan is near the Daraa-Ramtha crossing, which is to be avoided.

The government of Assad, who is now under domestic pressure unprecedented in his 11-year rule, has announced a string of reforms in a bid to quell a rising wave of dissent.
