France summons Israel ambassador over Gaza flotilla raid
France's government summoned Israel's ambassador in Paris on Monday to demand an explanation of the deadly Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, the foreign ministry said.
Following the French government's condemnation of the raid, the ministry "officially expressed the French authorities' reaction to the ambassador of Israel and asked him for an explanation," said ministry spokesman Romain Nadal.
Ahead of the summons, the Israeli ambassador in Paris, Daniel Shek, told French radio station RTL that Israeli forces had acted in self-defence against an attack by armed passengers in the flotilla.
"When the life of soldiers is in danger as was clearly the case, it is normal and internationally accepted that they have the right to defend themselves," he said.
