PARIS, Dec 1 (AFP) - France on Monday raised its terror alert level one notch because of general insecurity internationally as end-of-year celebrations loomed.

"Even though no threat to the national territory has been identified, the international environment and precautions before year-end holidays make it necessary to step up vigilance and protection," Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin's office said in a statement released ahead of the new measures.

The order raised the alert status from the lowest, yellow, to the next highest, orange, on a four-grade scale.

The measure brings in reinforced patrols of airports, railway stations and shopping areas and a heightened preparedness of the military. Religious buildings, particularly synagogues and mosques, will have stepped-up surveillance.
