PARIS, Sept 8 (AFP) - France said Wednesday it would stand side-by-side with Rome one day after two female Italian aid workers were kidnapped at gunpoint in Iraq.

"France expresses its solidarity with the authorities, the Italian people and the families of the two women in this trying time," foreign ministry spokesman Herve Ladsous told reporters.

The two Italians, Simona Torretta and Simona Pari, as well as two Iraqi aid workers, were abducted from their offices in a quiet Baghdad neighbourhood on Tuesday afternoon.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the kidnappings and it was not immediately clear whether they were criminal or politically motivated.

France was still awaiting news of two French journalists and their Syrian driver kidnapped in Iraq on August 20 by a group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq, the same group that murdered an Italian journalist last month.
