France slams 'criminals' opposing Tunisia change
France denounced on Monday what it said were the "criminal gangs" that it said were opposing the change of government in Tunisia following the overthrow of strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The French foreign ministry did not explicitly identify those responsible for the attacks, but the statement came as reports from Tunisia suggested that supporters of the ousted regime were seeking to sow chaos.
"France condemns in the strongest terms the criminal gangs that are roaming Tunisia and those who are backing them in the vain hope of undermining changes that took place in a constitutional manner," ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said.
France urged Tunisia to quickly name a new government and praised the Tunisian people for its civic spirit in organising neighbourhood security groups to defend against illegal attacks.
