PARIS, May 18 (AFP) - The June 30 deadline for the restoration of sovereignty to the Iraqi people and plans for elections in January 2005 must be maintained, French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said Tuesday.

In a letter to the Iraqi Governing Council, Barnier said he hoped Monday's killing of Council chief Ezzedine Salim "does not call into question the political process begun in Iraq, which should lead to the restoration of Iraqi sovereignty on June 30 and general elections in January 2005."

"Despite the difficulties that your country is now facing, it is vital that these commitments be kept and that they respond to the hopes of the Iraqi people," Barnier said in the letter, made public by his ministry.

On Monday, Barnier said June 30 would be "a moment of truth" in Iraq, adding: "We'll see if this transfer of sovereignty is sincere."
