France pulls Japanese diabetic drugs amid cancer fears
French authorities on Thursday pulled two diabetic treatments made by Japan's Takeda Pharmaceutical off shelves after warning they posed significant cancer risks.
The drugs agency Afssaps said Takeda's Actos and Competact brands had been "suspended immediately from the market" in France.
The body's director-general Dominique Maraninchi said there were alternatives available to replace them.
The decision follows an Afssaps warning in April that there was an increased risk of bladder cancer of around 20 percent depending on usage and treatment time.
Actos was authorised for use in Europe in 2000 and Competact in 2006.
