STRASBOURG, Sept 15 (AFP) - Belgian Major General Charles-Henri Delcour will succeed French Lieutenant General Jean-Louis Py at the head of Eurocorps, the pan-European defense force said in a statement Thursday.

Delcour, who became Eurocorps chief of staff in January 2004, will take up the post on September 23 with a two-year mandate.

Py commanded the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, comprising 10,000 soldiers from 37 countries, from August 2004 to February 2005. Dalcour also took part in the Afghanistan mission.

Eurocorps, set up in 1992 at the initiative of France and Germany as the first step towards a European army, reached a cooperation agreement with NATO in 1993.
