PARIS, Oct 25 (AFP) - French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said Monday that regardless of who wins the US presidential election next week, France and the United States need a "new alliance."

While declining to say whether he preferred a victory for the Republican incumbent George W. Bush or his Democratic challenger John Kerry, Barnier told the private French television station LCI: "We need a new alliance, an alliance based on mutual respect, which is not allegiance."

Relations between Paris and Washington have been strained for the past two years, in particular over the US-led invasion of Iraq.
