France may increase tax in 2013 to bolster a series of other deficit-cutting measures announced this year, Budget Minister Francois Baroin said on Wednesday.

The government plans to find "new fiscal resources from 2013, whether that be by cutting new social and tax breaks or failing that, a progressive rise in the CRDS," a tax introduced to support the social security system, he wrote in a letter to lawmakers cited in the newspaper Les Echos.

An official in Baroin's office told AFP the main emphasis was still on cutting tax breaks and a rise in the CRDS portion of income tax was "not being planned at a political level."
