France lends 'full support' to Ecuadoran president
French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed Thursday his "full support" for Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa, condemning an attempt to undermine the constitutional order in the South American country.
The president "condemns the violence and attempts to undermine the constitutional order" in Ecuador and "expresses his full support for President Correa and his democratically-elected government," said a statement from his office.
Ecuador was plunged into crisis Thursday as troops seized the main airport and police stormed the Congress, forcing the government to declare a state of emergency and denounce an attempted coup.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner also condemned the violence "in the strongest possible terms" and called for "respect of the constitutional order, institutions and particularly the person of President Rafael Correa," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Fearing for his life, Correa sought refuge in a Quito hospital, which he said police protesting proposed pay cuts tried to storm.
