BAYONNE, France, June 15 (AFP) - A British lorry driver, Christopher Eagle, 51, has been sentenced by a French court to six years in prison for trying to smuggle a tonne of cannabis from Gibraltar.

Eagle, who was also fined EUR 2 million (USD 2.4 million), was arrested in January 2004 after French customs officers found the drugs hidden behind crates of oranges in a roadside check near the Spanish border.

During his trial, he claimed he was not present when the truck was loaded up in Gibraltar and he did not know he was transporting the cannabis.
