French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner on Wednesday paid tribute to Argentina's late former president Nestor Kirchner, hailing his role in developing his country and its economy.

Kirchner, husband of the country's current leader Cristina Kirchner, died earlier Wednesday of a heart attack.

"Argentina has lost a statesman who contributed to the development of his country, the revival of its economy and its international vibrancy," said Kouchner.

Kirchner sought to strengthen historically strong ties between Argentina and France "in a spirit of dialogue and trust, notably in human rights".

"We remember him as a man of action and conviction," Kouchner addded.
