PARIS, June 19, 2006 (AFP) - France said Monday it was concerned about North Korea's suspected plans to hold a long-range missile test and called on Pyongyang to respect a moratorium on such launches.

"France expresses its deep worry at the preparations for a possible ballistic missile test by North Korea," foreign ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei told journalists.

He said North Korea should "abstain from any action that would go against the spirit" of a 2005 declaration that it would pursue efforts to bring peace and stability to northeast Asia.

The United States and Japan have warned of "severe action" if North Korea launches the long-range Taepodong-2 missile.
