PARIS - France said Thursday it would donate an extra EUR 4.2 million to help ease the humanitarian crisis caused by fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The money "will be released quickly in order to enable World Food Programme stocks to be built up again in the region," said a foreign ministry spokesman.
The donation is in addition to the EUR 3.3 million that France already budgeted to the World Food Programme and French aid groups, he said.
Since August, forces for rebel general Laurent Nkunda fought with the Congolese army in the northeastern province of Nord-Kivu. Tens of thousands of people were displaced.
