A French government source on Monday denied reports that French troops had arrested Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo, as forces loyal to his rival Alassane Ouattara stormed his headquarters.

"Mr. Gbagbo was arrested by Mr. Ouattara's troops, that is true, but not by French special forces, who did not go into the enclosure of (Gbagbo's) residence," the source said.

Earlier, witnesses had reported seeing pro-Ouattara forces entering Gbagbo's besieged residential compound, while French and UN armoured vehicles deployed on a road leading to the complex.

The French military high command added that "at no time" did French forces enter the gardens or the grounds of Gbagbo's compound.
