PARIS, Sept 22 (AFP) - France could ask computer giant Hewlett-Packard to reimburse state financial aid that it has received if the US company goes ahead with a major job-reduction programme, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said Friday.

"I believe it would be normal for Hewlett-Packard to reimburse any specific public aid that it may have enjoyed," Villepin said in an interview with Les Echos newspaper.

"Each of us has a duty towards the collectivity. Those who receive public aid must respect the obligations that go with it," de Villepin said.

De Villepin also urged the company to scale back the planned job cuts, which could effect 1,240 out of some 5,100 employees in France.
